Building a collaborative workspace for an expanding law practice
With multiple offices in Essex and Suffolk, Ellisons Solicitors needed to expand its presence in Chelmsford with a move into a newly refurbished, modern office space. The relocation reflects the law firm’s significant growth since opening in Chelmsford seven years ago and aligns with its long term commitment to the region’s thriving business community. The new workspace, designed and delivered by Spacio, brings multiple legal teams together under one roof in a highly collaborative, future ready environment.
Enhancing collaboration for a leading law firm
Spacio worked with Ellisons Solicitors to design and deliver a workplace that reflects both the firm’s professionalism and its people-first culture. The brief focused on creating a calm, functional environment that supports focused legal work, collaboration, and client interaction. Our approach balanced practicality with considered design, ensuring the space feels welcoming, efficient, and aligned with the firm’s evolving ways of working.
Ellisons Solicitors sought a modern, future ready workspace to support their expanding Chelmsford team. Having opened the office seven years earlier with no pre existing client base, the firm has since grown into a thriving full service practice serving the city’s rapidly developing business community. Their relocation to County House on New London Road required a complete redesign to bring multiple legal teams together under one roof and reflect their professional, people focused ethos.
The brief called for a high quality environment that would strengthen collaboration across departments, enhance client experience, support long term growth and align with Ellisons’ reputation for clarity, quality and trust.
The new workspace was designed to enhance communication and create a cohesive, dynamic environment. The office layout consolidates corporate and commercial, employment, litigation, real estate and private client teams into a single, unified space, enabling teams to work independently, book private meeting rooms for their confidential client meetings, and have space to collaborate.
Key spatial features include:

• Brand aligned finishes that project a contemporary, confident identity
The Chelmsford office design was crafted to embody Ellisons’ commitment to sustainable, long term growth and its position within one of Essex’s most dynamic business centres.
Spacio delivered a full workplace transformation, refreshing the interior architecture to meet the needs of a modern legal practice.
The build focused on refurbishing the space to improve functionality, comfort and flow, installing future proof infrastructure to support specialist teams. Creating a welcoming client environment with high quality finishes, our team balanced the need for collaborative areas with private work settings.
As a result the Cat B build included a new reception, client area (soft seated area), meeting rooms, Teams rooms, kitchen, and the open plan workspace alongside the HVAC reconfiguration.
The project has had a transformative effect on Ellisons’ Chelmsford operations. Their leadership team emphasised that the move had marked a milestone for Ellisons, representing confidence in Chelmsford’s future and providing “the right environment for our people to thrive and continue delivering the high quality advice our clients expect”.
Their new office reflects the firm’s long term commitment to Chelmsford and its evolving business community. Bringing all major teams under one roof strengthens internal cohesion and supports the delivery of seamless, full service legal expertise. The firm’s positive workplace culture. recognised with Great Place to Work® accreditation, is further supported by this new, modern space designed to enable staff wellbeing and performance.
